She was predeceased by: her parents, Lee Mercer and Olive Mercer; her husband Daniel Andrew Hawthorne; her children, Randy Hawthorne and Dianne Hawthorne Watson; and her siblings, Bill, Jack, Don and Bobbie.

She is survived by: her daughter-in-law Bonnie Nugent Hawthorne; her grandchildren, Lori Hawthorne, Christopher Hawthorne (Alysia), Kelli Watson Miller (Dennis), Christy Watson Lee (Virgil) and Jennifer Espinosa (Domingo); her friend Leon Humphries; her niece Bilbo Foldes; her nephew Pete Spencer; and her friend Paulina Ussery. She is also survived by great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

“The world has less sparkle today with the loss of Miss Betty. My mother (Mary Alix Barnidge), Miss Betty and Miss Jeanne Fuqua were good friends since business school when they were very young women. They were a hoot, going "dirty footing" every weekend....just enjoying each others company. God bless her. Marlene Philp”
