He was predeceased by: his wife Rose Marie Hampton (Smith); his son Joe F. Hampton, Jr.; his parents, Troy Franklin Hampton and Lillie Hampton (Allred); his granddaughter Elizabeth Ward; and his sisters, Irene Stewart and Ruby Gunter.

He is survived by: his son Judge Bruce; his daughter-in-law Cindy Hampton of Ruston, Louisiana; his son David; his daughter-in-law Bridget Hampton of Monroe, Louisiana; his daughter Sharon; and his son-in-law Gregg Ward of Oak Grove, Louisiana. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
