He was predeceased by: his wife Katie Harris Carter; his former wife Barbara H. Carter; and his parents, Ewell Carter and Corinne Meadows Carter. He is survived by: his children, David Chatman (Ella Rose) of Goudeau, Robert Carter (Bessie), Waneita (Curley) of Big Cane, Dalton F. Carter, Jr. of Centerville, Elwood Carter (Susie) of Centerville and Jane McGlone (Robert) of Big Cane; and his sister Ione Doucet of Goudeau. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
