He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert H. Gurtner and Elizabeth Alice Haney Gurtner of New Orleans, LA; his wife Josephine Gunter Gurtner of Brockton, Alabama; his children, Richard W Smythe, Ronald A Smythe and Debra G Smythe; and his grandson Richard W Smythe, Jr..
He is survived by: his daughters, Susan Culver (Charlie) and Catherine Joanne Loyacono; his grandchildren, Dorey Mejia (Arturo), Loryn Matthews (Joseph), Kathy Haley (Trampas), Angela DeNicolo (Mark), Tami Dietrich (Damien), Judith Smythe (Jason Bourgeois), Jennifer Estopinal (Todd) and Jessica Loyacono (Joseph Shanahan); his great grandchildren, Alexandra, Austin, Alyssa, Caroline, Samuel, Greg, Chris, Chase, Andrew, Ava, Dawson, Amelia, Josie, Jason, Anthony and Ayden; and his friends, Lucille Brehm (Clarence) and Colleen Lumpkin (Joshua). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 11th 2025 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home (4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Metairie, LA 70006). A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 11th 2025 at 11:30 AM at the same location.
