He was predeceased by: his father Bob Payne; his grandmothers, Rose Holmes and Margie Johnson; his brother Kevin Payne; his brothers-in-law, Carl and Robert Lee Williams; and his friends, Bernell "Chuck" Charles and Jessie Gamble.
He is survived by: his mother Lee Aster Bulter; his wife Angelia Butler; his children, James "Dodi" Smith, Jr. (Kim) and Caperella Smith-Rodriguez (Nigil); his siblings, Rose McKeel (John), Connie Butler, Paulette Lee, Pauline Stoner (Reginald), Stephanie Payne, Bobbie Faye Hausey, Gerald Butler, Kris Butler, Walter Butler (Kutrina) and Marshall Payne; his goddaughters, Mahogany, Beverly and Brionna; and his friend Jerry Lee Davis. He is also survived by five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three aunts, one uncle, sixteen nieces, five nephews, thirty-four great nieces and nephews, a great-great niece.
