He was predeceased by: his spouse Eveling Chess; his daughter Donna Chess; his parents, Woodrow Chess and Rosie Mae Chess; and his siblings, Wendell Chess, Edward Chess and Willie Dean Bailey.
He is survived by: his children, Deterice Mitchell (Don), Demetrics LaNeair (Samuel) and Tamara Phillips (Terry); and his siblings, Johnnie Chess (Cynthia), Clementine Williams (Rodney), Esther Chess, Jacqueline Landry, Mary Lee Chess and Linnie Smith. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
