He was predeceased by: his parents, Marvin Chapman and Beulah Mae Young Bates; and his brothers, Marvin Chapman Bates, Jr. and Robert Dewayne Bates. He is survived by: his wife Ella Mae Bailey Bates of Lafayette, LA; his children, Ann Bates Carmichael of Baton Rouge, LA and Keith (Sammye) of Lafayette, LA; and his grandchildren, Mary Carmichael Andrew (Peter), Catherine Carmichael, Daniel Bates (Michele) and Paige Bates Rhinehart (John). He is also survived by his seven great-grandchildren.
