He was predeceased by: his wife Ida Coates Thompson; his parents, William Thompson and Maudie Thompson; his children, Jerry Coates, Sr., Johnny Coates, Sr., Jackie Coats, Larry Coates and Nellie Duplechain; his brother Jerry Dale Thompson, Sr.; his grandchild Tracy Duplechain; his great grandchild Blakelynn Godeaux; his nephew Bruce Thompson; his great-nephew Bryan Thompson; his great-niece Britney Bell; and his daughter-in-law Laura Coates.
He is survived by: his grandchildren, Johnny Coates, Jr., Jerry Coates, Jr., Donavan Coates of Taylor Coates, D. J, Johnica Godeaux, Kristine Jones, Kayla Cordova, Tasha Coates, Brandie Burke and Brittany Coates; his nieces, Sherry Thompson Anderson and Donna Thompson Handy; his nephew Jerry Dale Thompson, Jr. (Becky); and his sister-in-law Mary Thompson. He is also survived by numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins.
