He was predeceased by: his grandson Quinton Thompson; his parents, John Thompson and Bernice Sneeze Thompson; his wife Amanda Douglas Thompson; his siblings, Shirley Haley, Alberta Thompson, Cora Lee Hills, Rose Brown and Joseph Thompson (Gloria); and his grandparents, Joe, Albertha Thompson, Eddie and Kitty Sneeze.
He is survived by: his children, James, Jr., Jason, Jonathan, Timmy Sims, Quincy, Terry, Levi Brown, Jaylynn Douglas, Raven Sims (Jerod), Mary, Brandi Thompson, Cynthia Flukes (Clemon), Lisa Jackson (Eric), Louvinia Williams, Tasha Bond (Randolph, III) and Koyota Brown; his siblings, Louis (Rosa), Charles (Tiffany), Richard Thompson (Rayetta) and Delores Brown (Harry); and his great-aunt Bertha Harris. He is also survived by thirty-two grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren.
