He was predeceased by: his wife Susan Tatum Hays; his parents, William Taylor "Buddy" Hays and Mary Gladney Hays; his siblings, William Taylor Hays, Jr. (Billy), Patricia Hays Bryan McLeod and Frances Gladney Hays Bays; his nephews, Christopher Bryan and Charles Atkins; and his niece Carol Hays Bourn.
He is survived by: his sister Emma Jeanne Hays Atkins; his sister-in-law Joy Hays; his sons, Kimbell Hays (Nicci), Clayton Hays (Trudy) and David Hays; and his granddaughters, Tatum Hays, Claire Hays, Jewelyn Hays, Mary Katherine Hays and Sarabeth Hays. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, family and friends.
