He was predeceased by: his grandson Sebastian Sultan; his parents, Gary Champagne, Sr. and Lilly Mae Cedotal Champagne; his sister Andrea Dufrene; his brothers-in-law, Corky Dufrene and Tom Orgeron; and his aunts and uncles, Jessie Cedotal (Gail), Ursin Champagne and Sherrie Guidry (George).

He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Chauvin Champagne; his children, Mandi Krieg (Josh), Tiffanie Sultan (Paul Gilcrease) and Matthew Champagne (Kira); his grandchildren, Taylor, Isabella, Abigail Krieg, Tristan Sultan and Ember Dardar; his siblings, Ralph Champagne (Mary), Jerome Champagne (Cindy), Diane Champagne, Jody Champagne (Florence "Tut"), Glenn Champagne (Robin), Dwayne Champagne (Denise "DeeDee") and Denise; his goddaughter Tammy Martinez (Cassie); and his aunts, Sherry Ann Billiot (Charles) and Mary Champagne (Ursin). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In retirement, Gary began making walking sticks - selling some, but mostly giving some away to people he knew were in need and even donating some to Relay for Life.
