He is survived by: his wife Sharon Carter; his children, Christopher Henry Cates Sr. (Sandy), Christina Cates Byers, Delbert R. Cates (Regina), Jack D. Kutzer (Carol), Matt Dennis (Cheryl) and Kevin Wayne Carter (Tonya Fraulic); and his siblings, John Harper (Pat) and Judy Harper. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
