He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Mertens and Lillie Mae Mertens; his wife Rose Mertens; and his siblings, Joe Mertens, Ben Mertens and Lucy Lindsay.
He is survived by: his sons, Stephen Mertens of Alexandria and Mark Mertens (Holly) of Pineville; his sister Helen Mertens Barlow of Pineville; and his grandchildren, Jordan Claverie (Mason) of Hattisburg, MS., Kacee Renee Mertens of Ball, Meredith Mertens of Pineville, Margaret Mertens of Pineville and Mark Kyle Mertens of Pineville.
