He was predeceased by: his father Louis Maxwell Smith; his daughter Zalee Gail Day-Smith; and his sister Valerie Sewell-Carpenter. He is survived by: his mother Ruth Mahaffey Nyberg of Leesville; his son Thomas McKinley Day-Smith of Ragley; and his sister Leisha Rangel of Leesville.
