He was predeceased by: his parents, Tollie Coates and Annie Mae Sudduth Coates; and his brother Charles Purvis. He is survived by: his children, Caitlin Anderson (Iliyah) of Alexandria, Jessica Coates Blood (Daniel) of Woodworth and James Coates, Jr. (Ashley) of Clinton; his caregiver Victoria Longino of Boyce; his sisters, Tanna Coates of Walnut, MS, Eunice Coates of Pine Prairie and Carol Coates of Bunkie; and his grandchildren, Eden Blood, Elijah Blood, Judah Blood, Cohen Blood, Isabella Coates, Eva Coates, Ezra Coates, Zep Coates and Admira Coates.
