He was predeceased by: his parents, Melvin Johnston and Imelda Johnston; and his sister-in-law Yvonne McKoin. He is survived by: his wife Maris "Scoopie" Johnston; his daughters, Charlotte Strother and Deede McDowell (B. J.); his stepson Udie Herrington; his brother-in-law Lee McKoin; his grandchildren, Drew Morse, Kristen Speer, Brett Herrington, Carlie Morse, Claire Herrington, Cassidy Alexander, Hayden Alex and Baron McDowell; and his niece Tresa Moyers (Trey). He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
