He was predeceased by: his wife Editha Barber; his sons, Melvin Barber, Jr. and Johnny Barber; his parents, Johnny Barber and Louise Barber; and his sister Vickie Crawford.
He is survived by: his daughters, Deborah Young (Kris), Brenda Downey (Edward) and Ericka Barber; and his siblings, Tommy Barber, Steve Barber and Sara Baughman. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
