He was predeceased by: his parents, John James Sanders and Gloria Parker Sanders; his siblings, Theadrus Sanders, Elmonzer Sanders and Monalisa S. Jones; his stepson Thad Cain Smith; and his granddaughter Jamila Sanders Tan.
He is survived by: his wife Arlene C. Smith Sanders; his children, Russell Sanders Jr., John J. Sanders (Erin), Darwin J. Buggage (Angela), Jamaal James (Adrien) and Tabatha Sanders Hines (Wallace); his stepchildren, Ernest E. Smith Jr. (Lisa), Shantell Smith Jones (Deron) and Candyce Smith Smith (Kirk); his daughters, Tallula Sanders and Gylesa Sanders; and his siblings, Essie Sanders, Marilyn Banks (Nathaniel) and Eteldridge Sanders (Edith). He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 18th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the New Rising Sun Baptist Church (16444 Highland Rd, Baton Rouge, LA 70810). A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 18th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location. A burial will be held on Saturday, January 18th 2025 at the Cain-Brooks Family Cemetery.
