He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Madison Mathews; his children, John D. Mathews, Jr. (Twana) of Hampton, VA, Anetta Lockett (John) of Baldwin, LA, Paula Mathews (Murray) of Lafayette, LA and Priscilla McCoy (Stephen) of Ardmore, AL; his grandchildren, Jaylon, Phaedra, Brittney Lockett, Stephen, Sierra McCoy, Jarius Carson, Keyanna Hawkins, Kacie, D'Vantell and Tamera Mathews; his great grandchildren, Jarius, Jr., Joseph and Jasmine Carson; and his godchildren, Todras Sam and Adrienne Sam.
