He was predeceased by: his wife Helen Marie Brouillette Mathews Smart; his daughter Katrina "Tina" Smart; his stepson Brent Mathews; his stepgranddaughter Ashley Brinson (Mathews); his parents, Bertha Mae Stewart Smart and John Rees Smart; and his brothers, William Darrell Smart, John Malcolm Smart Sr. and Harold Lynn Smart.
He is survived by: his sons, John Rees Smart and Bertha Mae Steward Smart; his grandfather Dee (Helen); his stepsons, Linda Mathews Sanders (George), Larry Mathews (Brenda), Gary Mathews (Sammie), Randy Mathews (Susan) and Ricky Mathews (Karen); his brothers, Albert Smart (Virginia) and Harles Smart, Sr. (Della); and also Albert.
