He was predeceased by: his parents, Ben Bates and Bertha Bates; his wife Betty Myers Bates; his son Johnny Bates; and his brother Ben Bates Jr..
He is survived by: his children, Charlene and Eddie Bates; and his sisters, Betty Banks of Stanton and Ada Marie Rice (Pat). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
