He was predeceased by: his parents, Dowell Combest and Gertrude Washum Thomas; his grandson Christopher Stewart Gay; and his siblings, Charles Ross Thomas, Betty Jean Johnson and Katherine Lucille Ashcraft Harris.

He is survived by: his wife Ceberta Clay Stewart; his daughter Letha Thomas of Williamstown; his grandson Andrew Dowell Gay (Amanda) of Williamstown; and his great grandchildren, Micah Dowell Gay and Colton Lee Gay.
