He was predeceased by: his parents, Winford "Wince" Yates and Evelyn; and his siblings, Oakie Yates, Kermit Yates, Corbett Yates, Wesley Yates, Ernie Yates, Margie Kidd and Pina Williams.
He is survived by: his children, Joseph McClay Yates (Jamie Endicott) of Prestonsburg, Anna Sue Johnson (Lonnie) of Wheelwright and Sandra Faye Stevens (Mickey) of Morehead; and his sister Jacquelyn Yates Hill of Prestonsburg. He is also survived by Great Grandchildren.
