He was predeceased by: his wife Lavon Herndon Yates; and his siblings, Charles Yates, Nancy Heady and Frances Florence. He is survived by: his children, Vickie Yates Glisson (Shawn Glisson) and Richard L. Yates (Diane Cook Yates); his grandchildren, Sarah Yates Jenkins (Adam Jenkins) and Richard L. Yates, Jr.; his great grandchild Anderson Jenkins; and his stepgranddaughter Pearl Glisson (Phi Do).
