He was predeceased by: his parents, James Rufus and Daisy Lee Hawthorne; and his brothers, Rufus, Jr., Dennis and Stevie Hawthorne.

He is survived by: his wife Joyce Hawthorne; his children, Richard (Bonnie), Robert Hawthorne and Regina Taylor; and his siblings, Danny Hawthorne (Vickie), Judy Hughes (Charles) and Janet Hampel (Bill). He is also survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
