He was predeceased by: his former wife Joan Elaine. He is survived by: his wife Julia; his children, Donna Sarky (John), Johnna Mullikin, Melissa Campton (Howard), John Merkle Jr. (Ronda) and Joy Rovno (Steve); his stepson Robert Turpin (Rachel); and his siblings, Robert and Roselyn Smith. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
