He was predeceased by: his son Eugene Darnell, Jr.; his siblings, Kent Nichols and Darla Cobb; and his parents, Raymond Lay and Neva Pell Norman Nichols.
He is survived by: his wife Peggy Lindsey Nichols of Symsonia; and his sons, Mitchell Nichols of Mayfield, Scott Darnell of Mayfield, Neil Mathis of Mayfield and Jason Mathis of Symsonia. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren.
