He was predeceased by: his parents, James Charles and Jennie Florence Coates (Durbin); his son Dana Coates; and his siblings, James C. "Bubby" Coates, Paul Coates, Rose LaTondress, David Coates and Shirley Benham.
He is survived by: his significant other Ruth Ann Burdette; his son Todd Coates; his stepdaughter Tina Thaw (Lane); and his sister Marie Coates (Don). He is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
