He was predeceased by: his parents, Herlen Walter Payton and Dolly Minks Payton; his son Matthew "Peewee" Payton; and his brothers, Donald Payton, Bobby Payton and Jerry Payton.
He is survived by: his wife Connie Payton of Stanford; his children, Herlen Wayne, Jr. (Darlene) of Florida, Clara Mae Payton of Georgia, Kenneth Payton (Kimberly) of Georgia and Priscilla Miller (George) of Stanford; his brothers, David Payton, Rannie Payton (Becky), Gary Payton and William Payton; and his grandchildren, Heather (Connie), Brandon, Kirsten, Aimee, Jennifer, Damian, Chayse, Madisyn and Tyler. He is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
