Upon his diagnosis of Stage 4 Tonsil Cancer in 2007, he became an active speaker for the American Cancer Society, receiving their "Hero of Hope" award in 2010. He would run and carry the torch for the "Relay for Life" (Sponsored by the American Cancer Society) in the following years to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
