He is survived by: his wife Maria Evangeline Sterling Champion; his children, Richard L Champion III and Amanda Roody; his stepsons, David Getchell and Bryan Getchell; his brother John; and his half-siblings, Henry, Bryan, Beth, Patty and Lisa. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
