He was predeceased by: his mothers, Viola Smith Burns and Lillian Powell Burns; and his son Donald Burns, Jr.. He is survived by: his close friend Yvonne Wilson of Louisville; his children, Dr. Pamela Andrews (Al) of Shelbyville, Paula Burns of Florida and David Burns of Lexington; his grandchildren, Damien Burns (Erika), Jared Andrews (Yoshino), Emily Burke (Tyler) and Sarah Andrews; and his great grandchildren, Adelyn Burns and Evelyn Burke.
