He was predeceased by: his parents, Arlester Ellis and Novella Van Dyke Ellis; and his siblings, Carl Edward Ellis (Katie), Willa Dean Wilson (John) and Betty Jean Ellis.

He is survived by: his wife Thylee Guthrie Ellis; his sister Dorothy L. Douglass (James); his daughter Peggy Tharpe; and also Rosemary Henley. He is also survived by several grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
