He was predeceased by: his parents, Hargis Hayes and Maxie Salisbury Hayes; his son Jeffrey Michael Hayes; and his siblings, Bryan Hayes, Jean Phyllis Hutchinson and Joyce Ann Ramey.
He is survived by: his wife Verna Mae "Teeny" Burchwell Hayes; his sons, James Keith Hayes (Elaine) of Langley, KY and Terry Douglas; his sisters, Josephine Ellen "Tootsie" Akers of Printer, KY and Judith Carol Horsley of Nicholasville, KY; his grandchildren, Jeremy Kyle Hayes (Marietta), Shellie Leann Baker (Jason), Corey Michael Hayes (Hillary) and Jessi Nicole Ousley (Josh); and his great grandchildren, Emily Kate Hayes, Oliver Barry Ousley, Lorelai Ann Ousley, Lainey Raelynn Baker, Jacee Baker and Kendyl Baker.
