He was predeceased by: his father William Fred; his wife Anna Pearl Price Atkinson; his former wife Irene Lawson Atkinson Stanley; his sister Lavon Atkinson Thompson; his brothers-in-law, Donald Thompson, Grant Martin and Lon Williford; and his nephew Lonnie R. "Tripp" Williford.
He is survived by: his sisters, June Atkinson Martin of Mount Airy and Kay Atkinson Williford of Indian Land, SC; his sons, Martin Atkinson (Patches) of Tazewell, VA, Mitchell Atkinson (Denese) of Pikeville, KY and Kenneth Atkinson (Darlene) of Pikeville, KY; his stepdaughters, Rita Kay Butcher (Sam) of Thelma, KY and Earleen Darby (Huey) of Prestonsburg, KY; and his grandchildren, John Brandon Atkinson, Felicia Dawn Holstein (Nichols), Heather Gray Koen (Atkinson), Jordan Tyler Atkinson, Pryce Gentry Atkinson and Kaitlyn Renee Nelson (Hurt). He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews.
