He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Slaton and Mattie Carter; and his wife Amaryllis Rafferty Carter. He is survived by: his son David Brent Carter (Sandy); his grandsons, Brad (Melissa) and Neil (Brittany Mason); his son Robert Dean Carter (Karen); his grandchildren, Justin (Lindsay), Jill Pendergraft (Brannon), Joy Ferguson (Josh) and John Mark Carter (Debra); his great grandchildren, Wes (Sara) and Lindsay Jones (Anthony); and his grandson Reverend Justin Carter. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
