He was predeceased by: his parents, John Joseph Schmitt and Nellie Stammerman Schmitt; his former wife Elizabeth Alvey Schmitt; his children, Robert Joseph, Stephen Andrew and Janet Marie; his grandson Christopher Bader; and his brother Gerald "Gerry" Schmitt.
He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Thomas Schmitt; his children, Catherine Schmitt, John and Jimmy; his stepchildren, Paula Bader, Julie Cummings (David) and Steven Thomas; his grandchildren, Jeremy Schmitt, Adam Bader, Hannah Miller, Carson Cummings, Dawson Cummings, Noah Thomas and Lindsey Wainscott; his great grandchildren, Summer, Sophia, Emma, Eli, Gavin, Jaxon, Reagan and Maddie; his siblings, Tommy Schmitt (Cathy) and Suzanne McDonald; and his sister-in-law Judy Schmitt.
