He was predeceased by: his brother Norman Cates. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Russ Cates; his sons, Brent Cates (Jennifer) of Owensboro and Bruce Cates (Karen Daniels) of Plainville, Massachusetts; his grandchildren, Ryan (Lauren), Luke, Matthew, Zachary, Lily, Abby and Connor; his great grandchildren, Kinsley and Kathryn; and his sister Reba Farley.
