He was predeceased by: his parents, James Marvin and Mary Frances Sweeney (McGregor); his wife Doreen Sweeney (Carpenter); and his siblings, Roger Sweeney and Margaret Finley.

He is survived by: his sons, James Grant Sweeney (Pamela) of Valparaiso, IN and Patrick Gregory Sweeney (Anne Marie) of Valparaiso; his grandchildren, Dr. Kyle Sweeney, Elise Sweeney, Erik Sweeney and Leo Sweeney; his great grandchild Jobie; and his sister Mary Ann White. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
