He was predeceased by: his parents, Delbert Thompson and Lily Tackett Thompson; his grandsons, Jaren Campbell and Matt Welsh; and his siblings, James "Jim" Thompson, Bill Thompson, John Thompson, Donald "Doodlebug" Thompson, Libby Zimmerman Howard, Betty Drury, JoAnn Hedges, Peggy Wright, Margie Whitney and Beulah Duke.
He is survived by: his wife Cassandra Thompson; and his children, Chris Rhinerson, Shawn Rone, Tara Campbell, David Thompson Jr. (Kay), Steve Thompson (Kathy Gardner), John Thompson (Elizabeth) and Jennifer Lee (Dale). He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
