He was predeceased by: his parents, Columbus O. "Jimmy" Phelps and Joyce Phelps; his grandson Joseph Eric "Lil Joe"; and his siblings, Douglas, Gene and Patricia.

He is survived by: his son Joey; his grandchildren, Brooklyn and Tucker; his brother Walton; and also, Mandie, Kathy, Galen and Amanda. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
