He was predeceased by: his parents, William Roscoe and Gladys Howard Abney. He is survived by: his wife Kay Hargett Abney; his children, Kathryn Kjarsgaard (Joal) of Oak Park, Ill, Elizabeth Calzada (Jorge) of Flower Mound, Texas and Darrell H. Abney, Jr. (Claudia) of Portland, Ore.; his grandchildren, Isabelle Calzada, Santiago Calzada, Kate Kjarsgaard and Collin Kjarsgaard; and his siblings, Betty Ann Gray (Louard) of Princeton, Deborah Blus (Allen) of Calhoun, Judy McCart (Johnny) of Conyers, Charles Abney of Miamitown, Ohio, Jerry Abney (Earlene) of Calhoun, Russell Abney (Charlene) of Davenport, Fla. and Norman Abney (Candy) of Boone, N. C.. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Maysville Community and Technical College Scholarship Fund.
