He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Ruth Brown Russell and James "J. P." Merrell; his stepmother Eva Bell Merrell; his half-brother Johnny Merrell; and his stepsiblings, James Travis Rickard and Anna Rickard.
He is survived by: his children, Cynthia Ussery (Nathan) of Evansville, IN, Kristin Parker (Bryan) of Madisonville, Celeste Morales of Madisonville, Phillip Merrell of Indianapolis, IN and Matthew Merrell of Madisonville; and his siblings, Wanda Merrell of Henderson, Kathy Youngblood of Henderson, Phyllis Hutchison of Henderson, Barbara White of Madisonville and Robert D. Rickard of Madisonville. He is also survived by five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
