He was predeceased by: his parents, Harmon Thornsberry and Ida Pauline Hall Thornsberry; and his sisters, Bertha Ames, Idith Blackburn, Edith Thornsberry, Edna Thornsberry, Hettie Noble and Gracie Johnson.

He is survived by: his wife Doris Thornsberry; and his children, Rick Thornsberry, Timothy Thornsberry, Anna Spriggs, Donna Church and Marsha Slone. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren.
