He was predeceased by: his wife Janice Brown Gambrel; his parents, Felix Gambrel and Fannie Gambrel (Nolan); his daughter Reba Stidham; his sisters, Charlotte Sue Mullins and Jean Gambrel; and his nephews, Dwight Madden and Roger Madden.

He is survived by: his children, James Edward Gambrel of London, Kentucky, Connie Rosales of London, Kentucky, Gerald Gambrel of London, Kentucky and Cheryl Osborne of London, Kentucky; his sibling Carolyn Browning of London, Kentucky; and his close friend Evelyn Smith of London. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
