He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Byrd and James Byrd, Sr.; and his siblings, Clifton Jackson, Shirley Parker, Tina Byrd and Sheila Ross.

He is survived by: his siblings, Ann Byrd, Sharon Young (Virgil), Clarence Jackson, Vincent Byrd (Alvina) and Ernie Byrd; and his stepchildren, April Manley, Alex Lawson (Danielle) and Katherine Lawson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
