He was predeceased by: his parents, William Asa Bates and Alice Samantha Jones. He is survived by: his wife Lee; and his children, Pam Bates, Peggy Quails (Patrick), Anne Allen (George), Jamie Bates and Susan Bates Creacy. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
