He was predeceased by: his parents, James A. Pelfrey Sr. and Viola Pelfrey; and his brother Richard Arlen Pelfrey. He is survived by: his wife Bettie Marie; his children, Stephanie Rhodus (Harold), Sharon Rodriguez and James Asa Pelfrey III (Darinka); his grandchildren, Leila Goodpaster, Camran Ahmadzai, Eliana Marie Pelfrey and James Matthew Pelfrey; and his great grandchildren, Meadow Goodpaster and Zaya Ahmadzai.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.
