He was predeceased by: his parents, Franklin D. Thornton and Jean Watson Thornton; his brother David Thornton; his grandparents, Garnett, Hallie Thornton, Vernon and Pearl Watson; and his friend Susan McIntosh.

He is survived by: his nephew Anthony Thornton; his nieces, Clarissa Barz (Wylie), Lauren Steinmetz (Jeff) and Lisa Droste (Chris); his sister-in-law Becky Riley Thornton Nickel; his aunt Ruth Ann Bateman (William); and his uncle Louis Thornton (Patricia).

Memorials may be made to Mental Health America of Jackson County Indiana, or National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
