He was predeceased by: his parents, Lloyd Petty and Faye Hayes Petty; his wife Sheila Swinny Petty; his brother Donald Petty; and his stepson Shannon Gibbons.
He is survived by: his son Richard Petty (Trish); his stepchildren, James Gibbons (Kacie), Greg Hall (Billy), Danielle Phillips (Danny), Amber Fulkerson (Coty) and Chassity Watson; his siblings, Johnny Petty (Phyllis) and Charolette Petty; his granddaughters, Mary Petty and Cacee Brawley-Petty; his daughter-in-law Melinda Gibbons; and his former wives, Brenda Petty and Vicki Hall. He is also survived by eighteen step grandchildren.
